Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club and Hispanic Women Leaders give to S.O.S.
Momentum continues to build as one hurdle has been crossed in the campaign to restore sports in Mount Vernon, as on August 13, at Mount Vernon City Hall, Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr. welcomed the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club and the Hispanic Women Leaders to give to Save Our Sports. Superintendent Tony Sawyer was also in attendance to thank the two organizations for their generous donations.
Both organizations have made an appeal to community organizations in Mount Vernon and throughout the area to contribute to the Save Our Sports campaign.
“Although relatively small in size, community organizations like the Kiwanis Club and Hispanic Women Leaders can control their level of involvement and therefore have the potential to have a great impact on our community,” said Mayor Clinton Young.
These donations come at a time following the announcement that Fall sports will continue, and that the campaign for Winter sports has just begun. These organizations see the true value of interscholastic sports and hope to show that everyone can do their part.
"Hispanic Women Leaders support Mount Vernon's "Save our Sports." Education and sports enhance our youth's emotional, social and academic development. It helps youngsters focus and develops their cognitive and motor skills," stated Myrna Hernandez, MD, President of Hispanic Women Leaders of Westchester.
The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon has already sent in their check of $2,500 that they raised at their Annual Classic Car Show. They have also donated $2,500 to the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau to provide scholarships to college-bound students.
“We’ve helped the youth in the Mount Vernon community for so many years. This year was exceptional in that we were faced with a serious problem. We just wanted to do our part so that the student athletes of today don’t lose great opportunities for their future,” said Dr. Joseph Christiana, President of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club.
Mayor Young also announced today that the Mount Vernon High School 70’s Alumni Association have committed to give an amount close to that of the Kiwanis Club, giving a special thank you to Frances Lightsy.
The Kiwanis Club also sponsored a brief reception following the press conference that was catered by a local business, Buona Sera Restaurant.
