MVAAA and radio personality Bob Lee host banquet fundraiser to save sports

The Mount Vernon Athletic Alumni Association (MVAAA) held a dinner banquet fundraiser as part of the ongoing community effort to reinstate the Interscholastic Sports program on Friday, August 8, at Mount Vernon High School.
MVAAA sponsored the event in collaboration with T.E.A.M Mount Vernon, the coalition of city and school district officials, the Mount Vernon Educational Foundation Inc., community members, parents and others.
Operating under a contingency budget, the school district was recently forced to eliminate its sports program for the coming school year, prompting an unprecedented fundraising effort by many to restore the program.
Working together with other groups in Mount Vernon, MVAAA is making a valiant effort to help raise the $950,000 needed to reinstate the Interscholastic Athletic Program for the Mount Vernon City School District.

The Mount Vernon Educational Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization, is the lead charity representing the school district to raise funds.
The banquet fundraiser was held at Mount Vernon High School, and lasted from 7 PM to 1 AM.
The banquet was hosted by Dr. Bob Lee from WBLS radio. Constantly in demand throughout the tri-state area, across the country, and around the world, Doctor Bob Lee is still one of the most recognized radio personalities in the country. From personal endorsements to motivational speaking engagements his reputation in the entertainment industry is immeasurable.
Guest speakers included:
* Mayor Clinton I. Young
* Ric Wright, Mount Vernon High School football coach
* Walter Kirkland ('76 MVHS Alumni/Track)
* James Rutter, new MVHS principal
* Keith Benjamin, ('04 MVHS Alumni Basketball)
* Donna Pirro, Mount Vernon High School Assistant Principal

It was a festive evening, with DJ Kevin Suga Daddy Woodley providing excellent music, and a group of young men known as Dat Deal providing superb dancing entertainment.
The Mount Vernon Athletic Alumni Association was founded in the spring of 2004 by Ann McDermott and Vanessa Cowan, since they saw a need to unite past and present athletes from Mount Vernon.
According to McDermott, plans are in place to establish a Hall of Fame to recognize those alumni from Mount Vernon who exemplified high standards during their participation in Mount Mount Vernon High School athletics.
